April 03, 2012

Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has traveled to Baku (Azerbaijan) for a two-day official visit.

During the visit, Azarov plans to discuss economic and military-technical cooperation, as well as cooperation in the energy sector with the Azerbaijani authorities.

In particular, the Ukrainian side intends to discuss the issue of building an oil refinery on the Black Sea coast for processing Azerbaijani crude oil, as well as the issue of supply of liquefied natural gas to Ukraine.

During the visit, Azarov will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, and country's parliament speaker Oktay Asadov.

In addition, a meeting of the heads of government of Ukraine and Azerbaijan will be held with the participation of members of the two countries' governments.

Azarov will participate in the ceremonial laying of wreaths at the tomb of Azerbaijan's national leader Geydar Aliyev and his wife Zarifa in Baku as well as in the ceremonial laying wreaths at the Alley of Martyrs memorial complex.

The Ukrainian prime minister will also visit the Old Town historical and architectural reserve and the Square-Museum of the National Flag and inspect the progress of construction of the complex in which the 2012 Eurovision song contest will be held.

According to the government of Ukraine, Azerbaijan was Ukraine's fourth largest trading partner in the Commonwealth of Independent States in 2011.

The trade turnover between Ukraine and Azerbaijan in 2011 totaled USD 1.4 billion, which is 12.8% or USD 204.54 million less than their trade turnover in 2010.

According to the Cabinet of Ministers, this reduction of the trade turnover between the two countries is due to a reduction in supplies of fuel and energy from Azerbaijan to Ukraine.

Ukraine had a trade surplus of USD 79.43 million with Azerbaijan in 2011.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Ukrainian-Azerbaijani intergovernmental agreements on transportation of crude oil and supply of liquefied natural gas on the territory of Ukraine were signed in January 2011.
