Azerbaijan acquires know-how in hydrogen energy

ABC.AZ

July 17, 2014

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan has acquired its own know-how in the field of hydrogen energy - yesterday the State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy (ABOEMDA) showed President Ilham Aliyev a hydrogen generator of its own design.

ABOEMDA adviser to the chairman Jamil Melikov says that a prototype generator has been produced so far.

"Although its principal scheme is not unique and is widely known, our specialists have applied a range of their own developments and solutions, so that the generator would operate reliably, would not “choke" and would be more effective," Melikov said.

The generator operates on the principle of hydrolysis - the water is decomposed into oxygen and hydrogen, which is then used as an energy source.

"Minimizing the volume of water required to produce hydrogen is one of our know-how. At the same time, various energy sources, like solar panels and electricity from the network (standard 220 V) can be used for the hydrolysis,” Melikov added.

In the case of use of solar panels a generator can be used as a device for electricity storage.

"Another sphere of application is welding work - burning hydrogen gives the temperature of 3500 degrees that for example, allows cutting metal without iron scale and carbon formation. We’ve already started negotiations with the Ministry of Emergency Situations about the use of the generator in the disaster zone. Being eco-friendly device, the generator can be used in both urban and living conditions," Melikov said.

Even the prototype generator is competitive in comparison with other devices.

"The hydrogen generator costs about 3,000 manat. At that, much more is spent per month, for example, for receipt of acetylene during gas welding works," Melikov said.

The Agency is sure that it will be able to start-up the generator in mass production and ensure its widespread use.
