Azerbaijan Becomes Best Among Ex-Soviet Republics on Level of Competitiveness

ABC.Az

September 06, 2012

Global Competitiveness Report 2012-13, published by the World Economic Forum, contains an unexpected conclusion.

The WEF has recognized Azerbaijan’s economy the most competitive one on the former Soviet Union area, except for Estonia, which has never been a recognized part of the Soviet Union in the world.

Azerbaijan received 4.41 points on the Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) and in fact shared with Lithuania and Malta (they have the same score) the 45th-47th place, although formally WEF makes Azerbaijan the 46th. Only Estonia with 4.64 GCI and 34th place is higher the post-Soviet countries. Kazakhstan is the 51st with 4.38 points, Latvia - 55th (4.35 points), Russia – 67th (4.2 points), Ukraine – 73rd (4.14 points) , Western democracies’ favorite Georgia – 77th (4.07 points), ex-USSR only aggressor Armenia – 82nd (4.02 points).

It is clear that Azerbaijan is quite far from incredible 5.72 points, with which Switzerland leads, but the Republic of Azerbaijan is behind Hong Kong (5.41 points and 9th place) only by 1 point. For the year since the previous review, Azerbaijan has won back once 9 positions from world leaders on the level of competitiveness.
