Azerbaijan confirms willingness to deliver gas to Bulgaria

Balkan Insight

September 21, 2011

Bulgaria could receive up to one billion cu m of gas from Azerbaijan in addition to the volumes to be pumped through the Nabucco pipeline once the country build its gas inter-connectors with Turkey and Greece, Azerbaijan's president Ilham Aliyev said on September 21 2011 at a meeting with Bulgaria's Energy Minister Traicho Traikov in Baku.

Azerbaijan once again assured Bulgaria that it had sufficient quantities of natural gas. In late June, when Traikov and his Azeri counterpart Natig Aliyev held a meeting in Brussels to discuss gas issues, Aliyev pledged that his country could provide the same volume of gas to Sofia.

According to Ilham Aliyev, the most logical route of natural gas to Bulgaria is through Turkey. Currently, Azerbaijan is negotiating with Ankara the terms for transiting gas through Turkish territory.

In early September, Azeri newspaper Zerkalo reported that Baku was considering alternative routes for natural gas deliveries bypassing Turkey.

"The oil and gas sector is fundamental for the national economy and a major source of financial contributions from abroad. In the coming years, most of the receipts in Azerbaijan's treasury should come from exports to Europe, but the prolonged negotiations with Turkey proved to be an obstacle," the paper said.
