Azerbaijan contributes to commemoration of Flight 93 victims

September 13, 2013

The majority of people around the world remember the attacks of 11 September 2001 in the United States with horrific sight of the explosion of planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City.

But another aspect of this terrible tragedy is associated with aircraft of flight 93, which was also taken over by terrorists and aimed at the White House.

On the board of the plane seven crew members and 33 passengers were captured. And it was in that airplane that real heroism took place.

The passengers rose against the terrorists and didn’t allow them to achieve their goal - to send the aircraft to the White House. As a result of the fierce fighting, the plane crashed in Pennsylvania. 40 people gave their lives to prevent even greater sacrifices.

The United States has hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the memorial complex dedicated to the memory of the heroes of Flight 93, reports.

Among the donations collected to aid the construction of the memorial complex, donations of the Azerbaijani people through the Azerbaijani-American Alliance have a special place.

The collection of donations for the construction of the complex involved the role of the Azerbaijani-American Alliance, former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, current President Barack Obama and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, John Boehner.

Another important point in the ceremony of laying the foundation of the complex are the trees planted along the road leading to the memorial.

At the initiative of the founder and president of the Azerbaijan-American Alliance, Anar Mammadov, red maples were planted on both sides of the road leading to the centre of the memorial complex. And plaques indicating that they were donated on behalf of the Azerbaijani people were nailed on the trees.

Vice president of the U.S. National Park King Lafin, who participated in the event, said: "Everyone who comes to the new centre will pass by these trees. These trees are planted in your honour as a gift of the Azerbaijani-American Alliance and the Azerbaijani people."

President of the Azerbaijan-American Alliance Anar Mammadov, speaking at the event, said that Azerbaijan supports the U.S. in the fight against terrorism, "I believe that Azerbaijan's contribution to the Memorial, erected in memory of the dead passengers and crew members of Flight 93, will strengthen mutual understanding and respect between the Azerbaijani and American people."
