The third annual Khojaly campaign.

- Washington, D.C. & New York City, NY

The Azerbaijan America Alliance has launched the 3rd annual Khojaly campaign in memory of the Azerbaijanis who were killed in the village of Khojaly during the night of February 26, 1992. Khojaly Massacre: Public Awarness Campaign for 21st Anniversary Background Since 1988, Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict over a small region of Azerbaijan called Nagorno Karabakh. Though the region geographically belongs to Azerbaijan, ethnic separatists insist that Nagorno Karabakh should be a part of Armenia. United Nations Resolutions afforming Azerbaijan’s territorial rights have been disregarded, and the conflict remains frozen in time. Khojaly is a small village within the Nagorno Karabakh region which, in 1992, had a population of about 6,300 people. In one night, nearly 10% of the population was wiped out in a massacre. February 25, 1992 In the middle of the night, Armenia forces began an assault on Khojaly. The town was surrounded on three sides and dozens of Armenian fighters poured in, overwhelming the few remaining Azeri Special Forces militiamen left protecting the civilians. February 26, 1992 The next morning, international journalists were greeted by a gruesome scene: a field littered with bodies, many of which bore marks of excessive cruelty. One observer noticed powder around gunshot wounds and realized that many of the victims had been shot at point-blank range. In all, 613 persons were killed, including 106 women, 63 children and 70 elderly people. Hundreds more were wounded and dozens vanished, never to be seen again.
