Golf is a sport that celebrates its surroundings. Eighteen holes can be defined as easily by interesting terrain or breathtaking views as by the number of strokes taken. Jon Hunt and the International Design Group recently completed a breathtaking course built over 7,011 yards of naturally rugged terrain nestled inside rolling hills and mountains. The undulating course ends with the final two holes played alongside a lake. The boutique style clubhouse stands with a terrace overlooking these final holes. Worldwide Golf Magazine commented in a feature on the club that the club house’s memorable setting, dining and atmosphere exemplifies “the warmth and hospitality of the region.”

This region is not Scotland or Sweden, which boasts impressive ratios of population to number of golf courses, but instead a region where the club stands alone. Located in Quba, The National Azerbaijan Golf Club, the headquarters for The Azerbaijan Golf Federation, is the only club of its kind in the South Caucasus.

From July 31st until August 3rd 159 professional golfers will gather to compete for the chance to win one of the largest prize funds of the season and graduate to The European Tour at The Azerbaijan Challenge Open. The competitors will represent over 25 different countries including Germany, England, Korea, China, Turkey, The United States, and Azerbaijan.

Golf is a young, but quickly rising, sport in Azerbaijan. The National Golf Federation opened The National Azerbaijan Golf Club less than a year ago. Worldwide Golf Magazine concluded,

“The National Azerbaijan Golf Club has been created to the most exacting standards and represents an audacious and ambitious foray into the sport for an emerging golfing nation.”

Anar Mammadov, President of The Azerbaijan Golf Federation, commented on the importance of the tournament to the club and Azerbaijan,

“Golf is new to Azerbaijan, so we hope to popularize it at all levels. In this regard, the implementation of a major tournament as part of the European Challenge Tour is extremely important for the country…we are sure that the tournament held in Azerbaijan – the “Land of Fire” – will be one of the brightest pages in Challenge Tour history.”

The next goal for this ambitious organization is to train the national youth team and Olympic Golf team to represent Azerbaijan in Rio-de-Janerio in 2016.
