The Season of Giving in Baku

Azerbaijan America Alliance
January 06, 2015

Although Azerbaijan is a majority Muslim country, the spirit of the secular winter holidays are celebrated with good cheer, lighted trees, gifts, and of course charitable giving. Azerbaijanis rang in the New Year like most Americans did with parties, friends, and New Year’s resolutions. Azerbaijani’s also ended their year as many Americans do, by giving to charity.

Baku, Azerbaijan’s capital, embraced the spirit of the winter season with a grand month long charity fair entitled “Cold Hands – Warm Hearts” in Fountain Square.

The event was launched December 3rd and throughout the final days of 2014 city residents and visitors enjoyed music, hot chocolate, shopping, and entertainment furnished by Nargis, Baku’s local lifestyle magazine. Alongside fashionable Azerbaijani and International brands, promotional products for The Society for the Protection of homeless animals B.A.R.S were available.

In addition, all proceeds from the fair were directed to the treatment of ill children and the "Home for the Elderly" in Buzovna settlement of Baku.

The fair was filled with the warm spirit of its intention, but one would be tempted even if they were not inclined to giving. The fair was filled with warm winter treats such as waffles with chocolate and powdered sugar, cakes, and indulgent fast food.

Azerbaijan adopted the secular traditions, both the indulgent and the thoughtful, that make the winter season that surrounds Christian and Jewish Holidays so wonderful in the United States. Hopefully 2015 will bring continued cultural exchange between the United States and Azerbaijan and encourage more events like the “Cold Hands – Warm Hearts” fair.
