Women in Azerbaijan: Working Diplomatically

Azerbaijan American Alliance
May 26, 2015

In the tradition of being the first lady, there are several duties that are generally performed as part of the office they uphold. Whether these duties include charitable work such as being the president of a foundation, making public appearances on behalf of her country, the role of this office continues toward a modern perspective for women serving as their countries first lady. For example, the first lady might have the ability to become involved in domestic issues on behalf of her country. This becomes evident with Azerbaijan’s first lady, Mehriban Aliyeva, has recently visited the victims of last week’s major fire at the Baku Medical Center. Both she and her husband, President Aliyeva talked to victims of a major apartment fire in the Binagadi district on May 19. Additionally, the minister of health informed the first lady of the injuries of those involved and offered her condolences to those individuals that lost their lives during this tragic accident. In her role as a diplomatic leader, it is important for first lady Aliyeva to bring international attention to her country, and continue to work on strengthening the international friendships that have been built throughout their administration.

First lady Aliyeva takes on additional duties in the acting as a diplomatic entity on behalf of Azerbaijan, which allows her to bring international attention to the country and their positive work they continue to do. In serving as the leader of the Azerbaijan-France interparliamentary friendship group, the first lady met with French Senate member Nathalie Goulet while in attendance of the 3rd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue while in Baku. First lady Aliyeva also serves as a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the Baku Process initiative, which focuses on the promotion of intercultural dialogue by promoting tolerance among cultures in Muslim and Western societies. The initiative also looks to form a mutual respect and understanding among cultures while calming the cultural and religious tensions that exist among different nations and their population. During the 3rd World Forum on International Dialogue, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova praised the first lady on her commitment to this initiative and the results that have been derived from their cause that was established in 2008.
